Scientific progress is often understood in terms of increasing recognition of the truth. In this evening lecture, co-organised by the Institute Vienna Circle and the Central European University’s Philosophy Department, philosopher of science Philip Kitcher (John Dewey Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University) will argue against that view and defend an alternative, pragmatic conception of scientific progress that recognises scientific inquiry inevitably pervaded by a wide range of value judgments.
